When water is pumped through the system, the intial air or gas inside the piping is pushed into the air vent by the pressure of flow. The float stays at its lower position in the air vent and the valve is fully open, allowing the air or gas that enters the valve to be discharged rapidly.
When water flows into the air vent the float rises due to buoyancy, closing the valve.
Once closed, the valve will not reopen, even if air or gas enters the vent and the liquid level drops.
When discharging water, the valve opens automatically to act as a vacuum breaker. This allows air to enter the valve, facilitating the drainage of water from the piping.
