Debunking Myths about Water Hammer
Steam Bulletin is TLV's free bimonthly email magazine on steam systems, energy efficiency, product selection, and more.
In this issue, we will address a few common misconceptions about water hammer and the effects it can have on your system.
Myth #1: Water hammer is less severe when condensate is close to steam temperature.
In fact, the opposite is true; water hammer is typically more severe in warm condensate than in cooler condensate. This is because the small temperature difference allows steam “pockets” to form in pipes which condense suddenly and at once, resulting in powerful shocks.
Myth #2: Closing stop valves when water hammer is detected will prevent it.
This will only help in some cases, depending on the type of water hammer occurring.
Myth #3: Small-scale water hammer can be safely put off.
Water hammer can lead to many operational issues as well as compromise safety, so it should never be neglected.

Engineering Calculator - Condensate Recovery Pipe Sizing by Pressure Loss
Our Engineering Calculator can be used to estimate the ideal pipe size to accommodate two-phase flow in condensate recovery systems. Properly sized piping is a great first line of defense against water hammer.
With dozens of other calculations available, this is just one example of how the Engineering Calculator can provide a useful reference.
